What is Hepatitis B?
Hepatitis B is a liver infection caused by the hepatitis B virus (HBV). For some people, hepatitis B infection becomes chronic and it can lead to advanced liver disease including cirrhosis or liver cancer. Most people infected with hepatitis B as adults recover fully, even if their signs and symptoms are severe. Infants and children are much more likely to develop a chronic hepatitis B infection.
Hepatitis B Treatment
Treatment for chronic hepatitis B involves taking a medication which suppresses the virus. It is felt that by suppressing the virus, complications such as scaring of the liver (fibrosis or cirrhosis) and liver cancer can be prevented.
