What is Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth?

Small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) is a condition in which abnormally large numbers of bacteria normally found in the colon are present in small intestine.

Symptoms of Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth

This phenomenon can lead to symptoms including abdominal bloating, abdominal pain, gas, and diarrhea. In advanced cases, there may be vitamin and mineral deficiencies and weight loss. SIBO may be the cause of symptoms in at least some patients with the irritable bowel syndrome.

Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth Diagnosis & Treatment

SIBO is typically diagnosed with hydrogen breath testing.  SIBO is treated with antibiotics, probiotics, or a combination of both.
