Coronavirus (COVID-19) Update
March 23rd, 2020
San Francisco Gastroenterology is proud to present our new Center for Colonoscopy Excellence website. Ninety percent of colon cancer deaths are preventable, but the GI specialists at SF Gastroenterology recognize the critical need for greater education and awareness about colon cancer, and what steps need to be taken in order to keep this treatable condition from becoming fatal. We invite everyone to follow our guided tour of the new site below and explore it on your own to learn everything there is to know about colonoscopy procedures and colon health.
Colonoscopy 101
We know that getting a colonoscopy is not at the top of most people’s to-do lists, but this doesn’t mean that it should ever be avoided or put off. A colonoscopy is a procedure that provides your doctor with a close look at your colon, also known as the large intestine. Your doctor will check for any abnormalities and determine if they justify further testing or treatment. Colonoscopies have a bad reputation of being invasive and even painful, but this is not true. Patients are very comfortable during a colonoscopy. In fact, sedation is used to ensure that you will not wake up mid-procedure.
Colonoscopy FAQs
The new Center for Colonoscopy Excellence website includes a comprehensive FAQ guide that includes questions such as:
Colon polyps & cancer
Did you know that colon cancer is the third leading cause of death in both men and women? This is a startling fact, especially when considering that 90% of deaths related to colon cancer are preventable. However, pre-cancerous and cancerous colon polyps do not exhibit many symptoms, so it is rarely obvious that a dangerous condition exists. Thus, early detection and treatment are essential.

The physicians at the Center for Colonoscopy Excellence are dedicated to making your colonoscopy visit as easy, straightforward and stress-free as possible. We provide patients with checklists for every step of the colonoscopy, including before and after the procedure.
